Deborah Rose plays her album Atlas at Green Note on Parkway on Tuesday 17 November with a new cello and guitar line-up. Tickets £17.50, music from 8.30pm.

The singer-songwriter Deborah Rose plays Green Note on Parkway on Tuesday 17 November, with songs from her album Atlas and a line-up she has not played with before: the cellist Gabriella Swallow and the guitarist Chaz Thorogood.

Doors open at 7pm and the music starts at 8.30pm. Tickets are £17.50 plus a £1.80 booking fee through WeGotTickets, and the gig is open to all ages. When we checked on 22 October, 39 tickets were left.

It is her first London show since she sang at University College London in Bloomsbury, at an event hosted by the American author and former presidential candidate Marianne Williamson. She comes to Camden from a run of shows in Belgium in September, one of them sold out according to her own tour listing.

“I’m thrilled to be returning from a fantastic, sell-out tour in Belgium, and then performing in Camden with two new wonderful musicians,” Deborah says. “Green Note is one of my favourite London venues and I’ve performed there many times before, most recently with folk singer Edwina Hayes and with Senegalese kora player Kadialy Kouyate. I’m looking forward to sharing some new songs, written during my travels in Morocco and Granada earlier this year.”

The album

Atlas is self-released. Its songs draw on poetry, the Psalms, Pre-Raphaelite painting and her travels in North Africa and America, as well as Shropshire, where she lives. She was born in Wales.

Her press material gathers praise from other musicians. The folk singer Judy Collins is quoted calling her voice “one of the finest I’ve heard”, and her singing is often compared with Eva Cassidy’s and Joni Mitchell’s. Dan Cassidy, the violinist and Eva Cassidy’s brother, says she “is a fine singer whose voice reveals an inherent quality that seems to transcend musical genres”. The Grammy-nominated songwriter Mary Gauthier says her songs bring “a place of calm, a place of wonder, a place of mystery”.

Williamson’s line has become the one she uses most: “When I heard Deborah sing, her beautiful music felt like a tuning fork of the soul. You could feel it in the room, we were all in a place of one heart beat.”

The Jazz Mann called the songs on Atlas “intelligent, poetic and literate and often downright beautiful”.

Who is playing with her

Gabriella Swallow is a London cellist who is playing in the West End production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the moment. Chaz Thorogood has played guitar for Robbie Williams at the London Palladium, and a clip of his solo on Angels at the Royal Albert Hall spread widely on social media.

The same trio plays the Oscars room at Ludlow Assembly Rooms on 29 October and the Kitchen Garden Cafe in Kings Heath, Birmingham, on 2 November before the Camden date. Later in the year she shares bills in York and Doncaster with the comedian, poet and pianist Alistair McGowan, mixing his impressions with her songs.

Away from the stage

She has run songwriting workshops in prisons, which earned her an award from the Prison Service and eight Koestler Foundation awards. She has worked with people living with dementia around the UK, and in Uganda she ran music sessions with children and young families.

She is recording her fifth album at Yellow Arch Studios in Sheffield, with the producer Colin Elliot and Richard Hawley’s band, and is writing her first book of poetry. A tour of sacred spaces, with songs, psalms and poems, is planned for 2027.
